ATI funded projects CONGA and CONGA EXT, led by Airbus, respond to a need identified by several UK aerospace companies for the development of a new multi-disciplinary design and integration process to support the conceptual design and assessment of future aircraft configurations.

To address this challenge, the project brings together Airbus and Rolls-Royce with a number of specialist industrial, research and academic organisations. This project aims to develop a selection of innovative capabilities to meet the future product needs by enhancing companies’ Product Development (PD) processes. Set-Based Design (SBD) based on lean principles has been identified as a suitable approach to satisfy the above-mentioned industrial needs.

By bringing together designers and method developers, the project will make it possible to demonstrate and evaluate the benefits gained from adoption of these enhanced capabilities for a range of potential aircraft architectures, making deployment more effective and paving the way for even further capability enhancement in the future. The collaborative project which began in late 2012 was looking to help deploy radical new technologies and superior products to meet changing environmental and cost targets for aircraft and power propulsion systems entering service beyond 2025.
