Gary Elliott

Chief Executive Officer

Executive Management Team
The Board

Gary Elliott is the founding chief executive of the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI), a private company established in 2014. The ATI develops a market-focused aerospace technology strategy, invests in complex science and technology-based research and development (R&D), and offers advisory services to government and industry.

The ATI takes a long-term UK government investment (currently to 2031), leverages it, and matches it with industry funding to create an annual fund of £400-500 million. To date, the ATI has funded approximately £4 billion in over 300 companies engaged in R&D. The investments typically cover a broad range of science and technology themes.

Under Gary’s direction, the ATI has taken a bold approach to encouraging innovation, particularly in the transition to sustainability. As an example, the ATI created and led the FlyZero project in 2020 to understand the potential for zero-emission flight, the technologies worth pursuing, and the opportunities to accelerate the energy transition. The project involved over 100 individuals seconded to the ATI from industry for one year.

While focused on activity based in the UK, the ATI engages with a broad range of national and international stakeholders, from interactions with government at the highest levels (ministers, civil servants, and advisors) to senior executives of companies of all sizes, universities, regulators, and the investment community.

Prior to the ATI, Gary was the founding chief executive of Hybrid Air Vehicles, a company he led from start-up to winning a $600 million contract with the US government. Gary has also held a number of senior-level positions within BAE Systems, NG Bailey, and Lloyds Banking Group, working across a number of international markets.

Gary holds a first-class honours in Aeronautical Engineering from the Queens University of Belfast and an MBA from the Cranfield School of Management.
