Richard Coates joined the ATI in August 2024. He leads the government relations and international teams and is responsible for the ATI’s relationship with Governments, regions and international partners.
Before joining the ATI Richard was Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for Transport, where, among other issues, he led on aviation regulation, security and the future of transport, including the Automated Vehicles Act 2024.
Prior to this he was a Special Adviser in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, where he led on issues like chemical regulation, waste policy and flood resilience, following on from a long career in local government.
Richard holds a MA in Law from the University of Oxford and serves as a reservist in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force.
