About our technology roles

The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) is looking for personable, enthusiastic, and highly capable individuals to strengthen its technology capabilities and provide expertise across its R&D portfolio, thought leadership and engagement activities, and innovation initiatives. Technology specialists are responsible for building the ATI’s technical capabilities, working with our external networks and leading work to define the UK’s strategic direction for priority topics. This includes supporting ATI technology portfolio analysis and providing insight into strategic technology areas. They play a key role in developing technical capabilities that impact the technology strategy and influence our stakeholders, who include tier one OEMs and their supply chains, SME technology providers, research specialists and academia.

The ATI sets the UK’s aerospace technology strategy and funds a wide variety of transformative research and technology projects, securing the UK’s global leadership in aerospace technology, enabling aviation to reduce its environmental impact and providing thought leadership on all aspects on the future of flight. The UK government announced continued support for the Institute to 2031, with R&D funding of £685m over the next three years. This will be matched by industry, generating funding of over £1bn for UK aerospace R&D up to 2025.

The ATI has launched its new technology strategy, Destination Zero, which sets the path towards achieving net zero carbon emissions for commercial aircraft by 2050 and positioning the UK as a leader in sustainable design, manufacture, assembly and operations.

As a Technologist within the Advanced Systems team, you will be responsible for building the ATI’s technical capabilities, external networks, and lead work to define the UK’s strategic direction for key topics. This shall include supporting ATI technology portfolio analysis, providing insight into some of our strategic technology areas, you will play a key role in developing technical capabilities that impact the technology strategy and influence our stakeholders, who include tier one OEMs and their supply chains, SME technology providers, research specialists and academia.

You will work with industry; research centres and academia and you will have a hands-on role encouraging the creation of consortia that with joint external funding will deliver the research and technology programmes of the Technology Strategy for the UK. You will lead the review of project proposals, feedback to stakeholders and provide recommendations for funding into government. You will develop roadmaps which form the critical content of the technology strategy ensuring that technology developments are linked to products, manufacturing, and market opportunities.

You will lead key strategic technical areas in the Systems team and, for your assigned areas, be the main point of contact with the organisation including leading some of our mission-critical workshops and working groups.

You will also develop a systems conceptual design tool to inform the technology requirements for the ATI’s technology strategy and to evaluate the benefits of systems technologies identified by the strategy. This will be a unique opportunity for highly motivated individuals to work with the UK’s aerospace companies and universities to further our capabilities in this key area.

In addition, the ATI seeks to continuously improve and provide the best service for the aerospace sector and so you will be part of the lean business improvement events, implementing process change in technology and working with others across the organisation.

The candidate

Competence in use of analytical systems modelling tools is required, though prior experience with the ATI modelling toolset is not required.
You may have specialist understanding of one or more of the following and a broad view and insight into the research and technology developments that are likely to drive the future technical evolution regarding aircraft:

  • Electrical power systems

  • Flight control systems
  • Communication systems
  • Flight deck displays and control systems

  • Systems integration and component testing

You will be an engineering, physical sciences, or mathematics graduate, currently or recently engaged in a technical capacity within the aerospace sector. You are also likely to have worked in a research function at some point in your career.

This is a role that will enable you to engage directly with a range of stakeholders and to use your communication skills and technical knowledge to inform decision making.
