About our technology roles

The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) is looking for personable, enthusiastic, and highly capable individuals to strengthen its technology capabilities and provide expertise across its R&D portfolio, thought leadership and engagement activities, and innovation initiatives. Technology specialists are responsible for building the ATI’s technical capabilities, working with our external networks and leading work to define the UK’s strategic direction for priority topics. This includes supporting ATI technology portfolio analysis and providing insight into strategic technology areas. They play a key role in developing technical capabilities that impact the technology strategy and influence our stakeholders, who include tier one OEMs and their supply chains, SME technology providers, research specialists and academia.

The ATI sets the UK’s aerospace technology strategy and funds a wide variety of transformative research and technology projects, securing the UK’s global leadership in aerospace technology, enabling aviation to reduce its environmental impact and providing thought leadership on all aspects on the future of flight. The UK government announced continued support for the Institute to 2031, with R&D funding of £685m over the next three years. This will be matched by industry, generating funding of over £1bn for UK aerospace R&D up to 2025.

The ATI has launched its new technology strategy, Destination Zero, which sets the path towards achieving net zero carbon emissions for commercial aircraft by 2050 and positioning the UK as a leader in sustainable design, manufacture, assembly and operations.

Reporting to: Head of Technology – Whole Aircraft

As a Technologist within the Whole Aircraft team, you will be responsible for building the ATI’s technical capabilities, working with our external networks and leading work to define the UK’s strategic direction for priority topics. This shall include supporting ATI technology portfolio analysis and providing insight into some of our strategic technology areas. You will play a key role in developing technical capabilities that impact the technology strategy and influence our stakeholders, who include tier one OEMs and their supply chains, SME technology providers, research specialists and academia.

Working with our stakeholders, you will have a hands-on role encouraging the creation of consortia, that with joint external funding, will drive the research and technology programmes which will deliver the Aerospace Technology Strategy and promote a competitive UK sector. You will lead the review of project proposals, provide feedback to stakeholders and provide recommendations for funding in partnership with UK Government departments and agencies. You will lead some of our mission-critical external workshops and working groups, supporting the development of roadmaps which form the basis for the technology strategy, ensuring that technology developments are linked to products, manufacturing, and market opportunities.

The ATI’s Whole Aircraft team develops and applies leading aircraft conceptual design tools to inform the technology requirements for the ATI’s technology strategy and to evaluate the whole aircraft benefits of technologies identified by the strategy. This will be a unique opportunity for highly motivated individuals to work with the UK’s aerospace companies and universities to further our capabilities in this key area.

The candidate

You will be a self-starter with great energy, a drive to deliver and a real passion for your work.

You will possess a broad view of the research and technology developments that are likely to drive future aircraft technology innovation. You will have demonstrated capability in one or more of the following areas:

  • Aircraft conceptual design and use of related tools and techniques, for example:
    • High level qualitative assessment of air vehicle designs
    • Quantitative comparisons of design variants e.g. trade studies
    • Assessment of aircraft level technology integration/interaction potential
    • Assessment of aircraft level technology benefits to support decision making
  • You may have research and/or modelling experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • aircraft conceptual design,
    • aircraft performance,
    • aerodynamics or flight physics,
    • propulsion systems,
    • operating costs,
    • sustainability impact of aircraft,
    • aircraft weight estimation

Competence in use of analytical modelling tools is required though prior experience with the ATI modelling toolset is not required.

You will demonstrate the following personal qualities:

You will be an engineering, physical sciences or mathematics graduate, currently or recently engaged in a technical capacity within the aerospace sector. You are also likely to have worked in a research function at some point in your career.

This is a role that will enable you to engage directly with a range of stakeholders and to use your communication skills and technical knowledge to inform ATI decision-making.
