The 23rd Templer Lecture will be given by Dr. Simon Weeks FRAeS CEng, Chief Technology Officer, Aerospace Technology Institute.
In November 2019, the ATI launched the UK’s new national air transport technology strategy. The underlying message is that the air transport industry must accelerate its journey to sustainability. Sustainable air transport will need a broad range of technologies on aircraft and across other areas that reduce the environmental impact of the aviation industry. There are still major opportunities to improve conventional air vehicles and propulsion systems. Progressive introduction of hybrid electric and all electric propulsion (for shorter ranges) has the potential to drive further improvement although electrified aviation will depend on zero net carbon electricity from land-based power generation. New sustainable manufacturing technologies will reduce factory materials and energy usage and emissions. Flight patterns of aircraft can be more energy efficient through the development and application of new ways of managing air traffic. Technologies for low carbon impact fuels, both bio-derived and synthetic, need to be accelerated.
The lecture will be followed by an informal reception and buffet.
