Assistant Accountant: 12 month FTC

The Assistant Accountant will be part of a small team, reporting directly to the Head of Finance and Finance Manager.

About the role

The role is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and will be responsible for supporting the preparation of management accounts, forecasts, and annual budgets, as well as assisting with financial accounting and other finance team activities.

The role is based at our Cranfield office, with some infrequent travel to the ATI’s London office, and other UK locations of stakeholders, as required.


Management accounting

  • Assist with the performance of the monthly management accounts in accordance with the month end timetable.
  • Preparation of accruals and prepayments.
  • Prepare and post journal entries as required.
  • Maintain the fixed asset register, performing monthly journal entries and analysis.
  • Assist with the preparation of reporting packs.

Financial accounting

  • Assist with performance of balance sheet reconciliations in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Resolve reconciling items on a regular basis.
  • Provide support and assistance in the preparation of audit, grant monitoring and tax packs.
  • Assist with the review process of weekly supplier payments where required.

 Budgets and forecasts

  • Assist with the performance of quarterly forecasts and annual budgets, in accordance with agreed deadlines.

FlyZero project

  • Support the FlyZero project finance and accounting activities as requested.

Industrial contributions

  • Assist Management Accountant with industrial contributions activities on a quarterly basis.


  • Support the Finance Manager and Finance Assistant with SAP Concur (invoice and expense solutions) procedures and processing.


  • Support the Head of Finance, Finance Manager to continually improve and develop the Institute’s finance processes and procedures.
  • Support the finance team with documentation of processes and procedures.
  • Provide information to stakeholders where required.
  • Provide support to and cover for members of the finance team as required.
  • Any other duties as requested by the Finance Manager and Head of Finance.

About you

  • A strong basic level of education and be actively studying towards a recognised professional accounting qualification (eg. ACCA/CIMA).
  • A minimum of 2 years accounting & finance experience and possess a thorough understanding of core accounting principles, i.e. double entry accounting, and accruals & prepayments.
  • The ability to demonstrate high levels of accuracy and attention to detail, and the ability to effectively prioritise workload and meet deadlines as required.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels in a diligent and professional manner.
  • The candidate should be a pro-active and a self-starter, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently.
  • The candidate must be at least of intermediate standard with Microsoft Office packages, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Experience of using SAGE and Concur would be beneficial, but not essential.
