FlyZero Project Accountant

We are looking for a highly motivated Project Accountant join our FlyZero project.

FlyZero is the ATI project to enable the UK to lead a revolution in zero-carbon air travel.

FlyZero will pull together expertise from across the UK supply chain and universities in an initial 12-month programme to look at the design challenges and market opportunity of potential zero-emission aircraft concepts.

The project was launched on 20 July 2020 by Alok Sharma, Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Bringing together around 100 experts from industry and academia, the areas covered by the strategic research project will include determining the technical and commercial viability of a future zero-carbon emission aircraft design; technology and industrialisation roadmaps; and assessments of the sustainability issues, the UK industrial capability, and the market and economic aspects. 

About the role

The Project Accountant will act as single point of contact for all financial matters relating to the FlyZero project, ensuring implementation and adherence to ATI’s financial processes, procedures and controls.

Responsibilities to include;

Project accounts

  • Production of monthly project management accounts, including preparation of accruals and prepayments
  • Preparation of accurate monthly forecast and cashflow
  • Analysis of secondee headcount, costs and expenses
  • Month end reporting to include variance analysis and commentary
  • Provision of accurate information for Payroll on a timely basis
  • Perform monthy verification of secondee costs, liaising with parent companies where necessary
  • Production of monthly grant claims for BEIS

Financial accounting

  • Support administration and processing of expense claims (via SAP Concur)
  • Collation and provision of information for grant reviews
  • Collation and preparation of data for statutory audit
  • Ensure financial adherence to the grant offer letter

Business partnering

  • Proactively work with the Project Director and Head of Finance to compile and manage financial opportunities and risks
  • Provide support and advice on financial issues to non-financial colleagues
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders to support project success


  • Promote a culture of cost control and budgetary accountability
  • Support financial compliance in accordance with ATI's processes, procedures and the reqruiements of the BEIS Grant
  • Liaise and work with the the wider ATI Finance team as required
  • Any other duties as requested by the Head of Finance

About you

The candidate will have a solid experience within project and management accounts.


  • Newly qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent)
  • Proven finance and management accounts experience
  • Strong financial modelling skills
  • Experience of working with a diverse stakeholder community
  • The ability to travel to FlyZero, ATI and stakeholder offices as required

Characteristics and skills

  • Proactive and self-motivated to work under own autonomy or as part of a team
  • The ability to demonstrate high levels of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, influencing and presentation skills and the ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels in a professional manner
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and work under pressure to deliver against deadlines
  • Numerate with excellent attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and see jobs through to completion
  • Excellent IT skills including Excel, PowerPoint & Word
  • Experience of using SAGE and SAP Concur would be beneficial, but not essential
