About the role

The candidate will be passionate about technology, innovation and making big things happen. As a senior member of ATI, they will take on significant responsibility for delivery and work extensively with sector stakeholders.  The ability to operate at a strategic level and drive initiatives that often break new ground is essential.  Main responsibilities will include:

1) Leading the development of ATI’s future funding and innovation offerings

Today the ATI provides a range of support to the aerospace sector including £150m/year funding for technology research, significant engagement and network facilitation, and a startup accelerator.  Most recently, the ATI also created the FlyZero project, a unique and first of its kind way of delivering collaborative strategic research for the UK.  The ATI plans to continue to innovate and improve these offerings.  This role will be central to driving this evolution right from a strategic level through to transformation. It will involve:

  • Synthesising a wide range of issues to create a coherent model for ATI’s long-term funding and innovation offering
  • Leading analysis and research in the team to identify gaps in the aerospace ‘innovation ecosystem’
  • Developing options to ensure the ATI is offering a globally competitive package of support to industry for technology and innovation
  • Establishing the case for change and investment, gaining support from the executive, ATI Board, Government and other key external stakeholders

2) Leading transformation of ATI’s offerings

The role will be responsible for leading delivery of the new elements of this plan and overseeing successful transformation of existing activities.  It requires drive, determination, and leadership.  Members of the ATI team, including direct reports, will help in this effort, but the candidate will be expected to “role their sleeves up” and get stuck into the work of delivering the change:

  • Organising resources and planning with the team how the changes or new initiatives will be delivered
  • Providing guidance and leadership to keep work on track and push through challenges
  • Working with internal and external specialists to deliver new services
  • Understanding and engaging internal and external stakeholders to maintain support and enable action.

3) Managing and ensuring high-quality delivery

The role will be responsible for the programme management of the ATI technology programme and innovation programme.  Both involve significant collaboration and teaming with experts across the Institute from other departments.

4) Developing ATI’s engagement strategy and approach

Sitting at the centre of the industry’s technology and innovation scene, the ATI works with a huge number of stakeholders.  Our approach to stakeholder engagement and how we manage this internally has a big bearing on the impact that can be achieved.  This role will lead on ATI’s engagement strategy including operational delivery across the organisation

The Team:  The ATI is a small organisation where all ‘levels’ interact and work together to contribute to the thinking and delivery effort.  The Head of Delivery and Innovation will have direct reports responsible for significant elements of the ATI programme and innovation offering that they will need to develop, lead and support.  There is potential to expand this team subject to business case and investment.

About you

The candidate will have strong record of, and passion for, driving innovation in technology/engineering rich areas.  Experience working in a variety of dynamic technology-led ventures with businesses of all sizes and levels of maturity (i.e. from startups to large corporates) is important to fully understand the role. 

They will have demonstrated the following characteristics and strengths:

  • Ability to quickly understand new contexts and situations, ask relevant questions, engage on topics and challenge ideas constructively
  • Aptitude and creative thinking, particularly in the field of business innovation and transformation
  • Agility to response to new needs and issues, bringing a positive ‘can do’ attitude in the face of challenges
  • Ability to lead and influence stakeholders through a challenge – to be an agent of change within the sector
  • Outstanding communication and engagement skills, able to effectively and convincingly communicate ideas to senior stakeholders
  • Ability to engage with diverse range of people including entrepreneurs, investors, corporate executives and government officials with gravitas
  • Strong programme management skills, able to establish and apply pragmatic approaches to deliver activities effectively
  • Good self-awareness, demonstrating a high-level of professionalism and tact
  • Leads by example, demonstrating high-performance and integrity in work
  • Excellent planning and delivery across concurrent projects
  • Self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity and works with energy
  • Natural collaborator, with strong work ethic and team spirit


Strong IT (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), analytical and communications skills are expected.  The candidate should be able to write in a variety of formats and forms (e.g. white papers, publications, presentations, etc.) in a clear and compelling manner.


  • Higher education qualifications in relevant subject matter such as Business/Strategy is preferable
  • Professional experience in areas such as research and development, innovation, transformation, venture investment and business scaleup will be an advantage
