Lead Technologist: Systems

We are looking for a highly capable Lead Technologist to join our aerospace Technology team. Reporting to the Head of Technology, Systems and Propulsion, this role will be an important part of our Technology team. The role is based in Cranfield, with regular travel to London and other non-ATI sites as required.

About the Role

Leads on:

  • Development of assigned areas of ATI Systems technology project portfolio.
  • Delivery of assigned ATI initiatives to develop and deliver growth in UK aerospace Systems technology.
  • Development of ATI Systems conceptual modelling, and integration with existing ATI Whole Aircraft modelling capability.

Supports on:

  • Development and update of Systems aspects of the ATI’s UK Aerospace Technology Strategy, including integrated technology roadmaps.
  • Evaluation of ATI Systems technology project proposals by analysis of the technical merits and identification of economic impacts through collaboration with ATI Strategy team.
  • Development and management of ATI funding calls for Systems themes and technology programmes.
  • Establishing and maintaining allocated ATI ‘In-House’ technology tools.
  • Participation in showcasing opportunities and events to publicise the ATI and successes of aerospace technology programmes.

Engages with:

  • UK companies and the academic community to develop strategies, plans and programme proposals for Systems technologies.
  • UK technology communities through organisation of appropriate committees, events etc. for UK companies, academia and relevant national committees.
  • UK Government bodies (BEIS and Innovate UK) to advise on ATI Systems technology through established technology project review and monitoring processes.
  • International technical committees and/or conferences to develop ATI international technology relationships and profile.

About You


  • Degree qualified in Engineering, Mathematics or Physical Sciences
  • Demonstrate consistent achievement in aerospace technology and may be active in the community through membership of relevant industry committees and/or publication and conferences.
  • Will have an in-depth knowledge and capability in one or more of the following areas of technology, preferably gained through working in the area:
    • Complex electronic and mechanical systems, digital wireless and wired communications
    • Safety critical control systems & software
    • System integration & component testing, with advanced diagnostics
    • Vehicle/Sub-system Health & Usage Monitoring
    • Modelling/simulation of complex systems
  • May have led the definition of technology/research activities.
  • Preferably familiar with technology road mapping techniques and associated tools
  • May have led research and technology projects in industry or in academia
  • May demonstrate a working knowledge of government funding for research & technology programmes
  • Preferably used to working in collaborative technology programmes with multiple partners.
