Next Generation Vertical Lift Programme (NGVLP) Flight Trials Project 3

The Next Generation Vertical Lift programme (NGVLP) was a collaborative three-year programme which built on the success of two earlier projects: rotor embedded actuator control technology (REACT) and rotorcraft technology validation programme (RTVP). The NGVLP had two main elements: developing technologies aimed at next generation twin light medium helicopter and migration towards a UK commercial rotorcraft manufacturing and support capability in Yeovil.

Opening a new phase for UK aerospace in civil rotorcraft manufacturing, the programme’s aim was to produce a step change in passenger ride comfort, providing a “jet smooth” ride by reducing noise and vibration, and consequently operating costs. The three research areas focussed on rotor blades, hubs/transmissions, flight trials.

The programme helped maintain the UK’s position in the civil helicopter sector and was instrumental in securing key vertical lift research, design, development and high value manufacturing jobs in the UK for the current and next generation of apprentices, graduates and engineers. It also developed a training infrastructure and courseware for aircrew and ground crew training.
