Structural Enablers for Advanced Metallic Wing (STEAM)

Airbus, the lead partner of this £5.8m ATI-supported project, worked with a consortium of respected industry and research partners to investigate technologies for the short term and long term exploitation of advanced metallic wings.  The use of metallics in wings has been a fundamental part of the industry for a long time and the introduction of composite materials in primary structures in recent years has meant metallics need to become more cost competitive and efficient in their design and manufacture to provide appropriate solutions for current and future wing products. Some of the technologies developed as part of this project include:

  • bi-metallic welded wing spars
  • bonded metallic components including stringers
  • near-net shape fabrication of components and assembly technologies
  • advanced metallic concepts and optimisation
  • wire feed additive manufacturing with in-process rolling
