Technology strategy

A challenging, market-led technology strategy for the UK aerospace sector.

The UK aerospace technology strategy serves as an ambitious blueprint for growth in the industry and sets out the investment scope for the ATI Programme. We deliver the strategy by working with the sector to develop a portfolio of world-leading R&T projects, building on our national strengths and advancing new capabilities.

Destination Zero

Our latest strategy, Destination Zero, focuses on the technology journey to Net Zero 2050. Through market analysis of technology evolution and adoption rates, it sets the path for UK technology to contribute to Net Zero 2050, while capitalising on the opportunities for growth this presents.

Destination Zero technology roadmaps

The Destination Zero technology roadmaps detail the strategic objectives and milestones for the UK aerospace sector across aircraft design, manufacture, assembly and operations.

When applying to the Strategic Programme or SME Programme, your project must align with content on one or more of the ultra-efficient, zero-carbon or cross-cutting roadmaps. Applications to the Non-CO₂ Programme must align with the Non-CO₂ Technologies Roadmap.

Ultra-efficient

Improving aircraft efficiency brings benefits to fuel burn, emissions and operating costs. The UK’s strength in wings, engines and systems is fundamental in realising these efficiency gains and securing economic benefit.

Zero-carbon

New market opportunities exist in zero-carbon emission technologies including battery-electric and hydrogen propulsion. Realising these opportunities depends on resolving complex challenges in technology development and system integration.

Cross-cutting

Capitalising on the economic and sustainability benefits of ultra-efficient and zero-carbon technologies relies on the UK being globally competitive in design and validation, manufacturing and assembly and through life support.

Non-CO₂

The first-of-its-kind Non-CO₂ Technologies Roadmap reflects the UK aerospace sector’s collective view of the research actions needed to improve understanding and reduce broader atmospheric emissions from aircraft.

Investing in UK aerospace

The technology roadmaps set out the investment scope for funding through the ATI Programme. When applying to the Strategic Programme or SME Programme, your project must align with content on one or more of the ultra-efficient, zero-carbon or cross-cutting roadmaps. Applications to the Non-CO₂ Programme must align with the Non-CO₂ Technologies Roadmap.
