The Hydrogen Capability Network programme

The Technical Lead will join the ATI’s Hydrogen Capability Network (HCN) team, which is at the heart of the ATI’s efforts to decarbonise flight. Phase 1 of the HCN is a 12-month project which runs from April 2024 to March 2025. Phase 1 follows a successful Phase 0 project and will continue to develop the objectives of the HCN and will focus on the following objectives:

  • Developing a long-term strategy and business case for the future of the HCN, including future operating and funding models.
  • Mobilisation and delivery of a two-year capital infrastructure programme to develop a medium scale liquid hydrogen test hub.
  • Mobilisation and delivery of a four-year strategic research programme on Cryogenic Hydrogen Materials Testing Standards (CHyMES) for future aircraft design.
  • Securing funding and delivery of a skills pilots for liquid hydrogen in aerospace. To lead to a future skills strategy and programme.
  • Developing a strategy for enabling the next 10 years of liquid hydrogen test and demonstration to make future hydrogen aircraft a reality.
  • Working in collaboration with industry and academia to scope strategic research projects and a challenge led approach to future research.
  • Engagement and collaboration across the entire aerospace sector on this emerging capability to gain insights, gather requirements and disseminate knowledge and develop strategic partnerships.

Phase 1 of the programme will run from April 2024 to March 2025, during which the HCN will submit a proposal into government to secure long-term funding for the sector for LH2.

The key outputs from Phase 1 include:

  • Development of a business Case for subsequent phases of the HCN
  • Developing a strategy for next phase of test infrastructure
  • The design of a LH2 research programme
  • The design of a sector skills programme
  • Securing LH2 supply for test hubs and materials test programme
  • Continued sector engagement and collaboration

The role

The Technology and Strategy Analyst will report to the HCN Technical Lead and the Head of Strategy & Commercial to support the delivery of the Phase 1 objectives listed above.

This role will involve developing an understanding of the liquid hydrogen aerospace sector landscape to create thought leadership publications and develop the HCN’s strategy. This will involve significant external engagement interfacing with a wide range of organisations including research organisations, product developers, and regulators/ governments. The role will involve undertaking strategic research and analysing information from a variety of different sources. This is a key role to ensure the HCN is strongly positioned externally as leaders in the field.

This will be carried out through the following objectives:

  • Developing awareness of the key organisations and advances in field of liquid hydrogen aerospace. Understanding the international landscape, covering commercial and governmental strategy alongside technological developments across both academia and industry.
  • Shaping the external comms around technology and strategy based the key findings from the HCN’s mapping and research activities, to position the HCN as thought leaders in this area.

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Reviewing the current LH2 aviation landscape and staying at the cutting edge in the areas below through literature reviews, attendance at events and communicating with the network.
    • Commercial strategy & industrial activity.
    • Governmental policy.
    • Academic literature.
  • Keeping up to date with relevant events internationally.
  • Drafting thought leadership publications across both short form blog posts and long form reports aimed at a variety of audiences.
  • Creating and maintaining a database of key research groups, companies, and events relevant to the HCN’s objectives.
  • Overseeing development of content for HCN’s website, external portal, publications, and reports.
  • Using knowledge acquired to steer other HCN activities.
  • Supporting the technical lead with representation in Global cryogenics including; International engagement across research, international visits, conferences.

The candidate

The candidate will be passionate about the decarbonisation of flight and driving change within the aerospace sector. They will have a background in research and communications in a technical sector.

Background and experience

  • Higher education qualifications in a relevant discipline are preferable.
  • Experience working in a technical field – the aerospace sector is preferred, in particular any experience around liquid hydrogen aerospace technology.
  • Experience of reviewing technical/scientific research across academic literature and industrial press releases.
  • Experience producing landscaping/ summary documents and roadmaps.
  • Experience in developing communications across both short form blog posts and long form reports aimed a variety of audiences.

 Skills and knowledge

  • Strong research skills – able to collate and summarise technical information.
  • Able to source information, synthesise inputs and perform impactful analysis.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholder across the academic and industrial communities.
